HBMSU leads Arab World at International Council for Open and Distance Education’s ‘Quality Network’

The Hamdan bin Mohammed Smart University, HBMSU, has joined the ranks of international academic and research institutions which were recently awarded with ‘Quality Network’ membership from the International Council for Open and Distance Education, ICDE.

The membership is HBMSU’s latest global achievement supporting UNESCO’s efforts to raise the quality of higher education which in turn helps advancing sustainable national development. It also reflects the university’s highest level of achievement as the premier institution which promotes quality education in the Arab World based on the smart education model and lifelong learning, as well as an active contributor in translating UNESCO’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, by ensuring inclusive and quality education for all and promoting lifelong

learning.

Commenting on the announcement, Dr. Mansoor Al Awar, Chancellor of HBMSU, said that HMBSU’s successive achievements in reshaping the future of education in the Arab World in line with the requirements of the 21st century are moving forward with the consistent guidance and the wise directives of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and President of the University.

Al Awar noted that joining the ‘Quality Network’ as a representative of the Arab World in the ICDE is an addition to the UAE’s achievements, as the country has always been a leader in enriching knowledge and strengthening the smart learning culture in the Arab World.

The ICDE puts quality education and lifelong learning among its main objectives and is committed to supporting UNESCO’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The ICDE has a strategic partnership with UNESCO which focuses on international coordination in providing education for all through smart, flexible and open education as a means to improve the lives of people around the world and support efforts aimed at achieving sustainable development.

WAR12 is just around the corner

Wieldy known as the pioneer of obstacle races in the UAE, Wadi Adventure race series has evolved as the as the ultimate obstacle course for both amateur and professional athletes, the 12th edition of the grueling adventure race; Wadi Adventure Race (WAR) 12 will take place at Wadi Adventure in Al Ain on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 8AM onwards.

Wadi Adventure Race is divided into 5KM, 10KM and 15KM categories which perfectly suits age-appropriate athletes to compete in their chosen category. Participants can register online for the race on Premier Online.

Speaking about the event, Nilesh Mistry, General Manager of Wadi Adventure in Al Ain, said: “Be here to witness the biggest and the best of all obstacle races in the UAE. Wadi Adventure Race is a great opportunity for the fitness community to come together for a day of excitement, fun and a test of true athletic ability, and the free training sessions are the best way to train your body for the great event ahead.”

A 4-Week Free Fitness Training Camp leading into WAR12 was conducted starting from December 17, 2016 onwards, every Saturday between 8AM to 9:30AM. The training sessions where all based around the actual obstacles to be used in the up-coming Wadi Adventure Race, ensuring that each session was a full body work out, and help participants get ready to face the obstacle come race day.

The last training session for this month is scheduled for Saturday, January 7, starting sharp at 8AM and finishing around 9:30AM with a cool down in the temperature controlled pool.

A healthy breakfast can also be purchased post training sessions which should be mentioned while making the advance booking for the training sessions. The training session is open to everyone who would like to kick start their week with some healthy lifestyle at Al Ain’s only open beach (Man-made wave pool).

UAE leads world with highest number of international schools

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has retained its position at the top of the world’s listing for countries with the most number of English medium international schools at 589, compared to only 511 last year.

The data was released by The International Schools Consultancy (ISC), a leading global market intelligence and research firm focused on international English speaking schools as part of a report that will be presented in full at the forthcoming International Private Schools Education Forum (IPSEF) Middle East on 2728 September 2016 at the Jumeirah Creekside Hotel.

Richard Gaskell, Director for International Schools at the ISC will be presenting the very latest data on international school growth in the Middle East plus a detailed analysis on the employment of teachers at international schools in the region.

At the resumption of the new academic year, the ISC report showed the total number of K12 English medium international schools worldwide at 8,489, with about 1,504 such schools located in the Middle East, which remains the largest subregion for international schools in the world.

Following the UAE, the other countries which figured in the top 10 include China (550), Pakistan (455), India (408) and Spain (353). Saudi Arabia and Japan were at 6th and 7th with 243 apiece, followed Egypt and Brazil at 8th and 9th with 191 each, and Indonesia at 10th with 190.

Going by city, Dubai leads the world for international schools by city with 276. Abu Dhabi lies in 3rd place with 154 schools, followed by Doha with 142.

The ISC’s data include preschools, primary and secondary schools.

“These impressive numbers only confirm the continuing growth the private, international school education throughout the Gulf region,” said Rhona Greenhill, cofounder, IPSEF. “That said, the business landscape is changing and this presents a number of challenges for private sector stakeholders which we hope to address at the forthcoming forum where we have invited experts on how the private, international schools subsector can continue its growth trajectory.”

Overall, the ISC calculates that more than 4.3 million students are now being educated at over 8,200 international schools worldwide; by 2026, enrolment is projected to reach 8.7 million.

“With the international and private school markets continuing to grow, and as competition increases, it is increasingly critical that schools and investors planning to open new operations in education develop strategies for success. IPSEF Middle East hopes to provide a unique reference point for all those involved in the financing, planning, design, delivery and management of a new school project,” ended Greenhill.

Increasing number of international schools and student mobility present unique opportunities for education sector

The UAE is increasingly gaining global importance as an ideal destination for investments in higher education as the Gulf nation gives top priority to education as a means to achieving economic success and development, said Prof. AbdulSattar A. Al-Alusi, President and CEO of Emirates College for Management & Information (ECMIT), during a presentation held recently at the Oxford Summit of Leaders 2016 in Oxford, United Kingdom.
ECMIT, a leading private higher educational institution based in Dubai, participated at the summit held under the theme ‘Investment in Science and Education: Investing in the Future.’ Oxford Summit of Leaders 2016 is an annual event for education, scientific research and business.
During the summit, Prof. Al-Alusi noted: “The UAE Government envisions an exceptional system of higher education based on innovation, academic excellence and scientific research. Its policies and regulations, programmes and initiatives are all formulated to meet its overarching goal of building a knowledge-based economy. The results of such efforts are visible in the growth and internationalization of higher education in the country.”
Data shows that the UAE has invested AED 10 billion into the education sector – equivalent to a 22 per cent increase in governmental spending on education, both general and higher.
“The UAE Government’s higher education strategies have attracted international student mobility to the country, which has exponentially grown to more than 37 branch campuses within the last 10 years – the highest number among 200 worldwide higher education providers. This has been achieved by providing the platform for the construction of state-of-the-art campuses, investor-friendly regulations and policies, world-class support services to migrating students, and a wide array of degree specializations that meet current job market requirements,” he added.
Prof. Al-Alusi further explained that in order to ensure excellent access to both public and private higher education for citizens and residents, the UAE adopts several measures and guidelines including promoting educational institution leadership in the areas of R&D, creativity, innovation and competitiveness; ensuring the sustainability of a quality control system based on learning outcomes and academic integrity; strengthening partnerships with industry to align educational outcomes and labor market needs; promoting a culture of continuous learning and providing smart learning opportunities; supporting community service and social responsibility; optimizing financial resources and the complementary role between public and private education sectors; and enhancing international cooperation and creating an attractive learning environment for international students.
“The main drivers of growth for higher education in the country lie in policies and infrastructure, and quality and standards. It is evident that the rise of higher education institutions is not random but rather a focused move to boost the economic growth of the country,” he further stated.
Oxford Summit of Leaders 2016 was participated by a wide group of decision makers, education leaders, scientists, and representatives of academic institutions, universities and specialized companies from more than 50 countries around the world. Organized by the European Business Association in Oxford, the session focused on the most important issues and aspects in the areas of education and scientific research.
